The batcorder system consists of hardware and specifically developed software applications. It is an established system for acoustical surveys. It was specially-designed for autonomous and reliable usage in the field. Extensions allow its usage on/in wind turbines or long-term monitoring.

Acquisition of bat activity is done by the batcorder. An unique algorithm recognizes and triggers recordings of bat calls while other noises are generally ignored. Thus, bushcrickets and other noises usually do not lead to sound files. Files are stored digitally with a high sample rate (real-time spectrum). The application bcAdmin offers a simple to use database for managing recordings and recording sessions. It also automatically searches for calls in each recording, analyses these and extracts measurements. The open-source tool batIdent identifies species automatically based on the supplied measurements. The results can be manually controlled and modified after import into the bcAdmin database.

Usage recommendations

We strongly suggest to use the batcorder in a mix of methods. That way you can for example collect spatial data using detector transects for identifying sites for batcorder monitoring. Simultaneous use of mist netting and telemetry give further information on population structure and roost sites.
